Summer Reading Program!

“Libraries Rock!” has been announced as the theme for the Kenilworth Public Library’s 2018 summer reading program. Registration for the library’s summer reading clubs for children and teens between the ages of 2 and 18 will begin on June 11.

The first 250 children to register will receive a free summer reading club bag that contains a calendar of events, program fliers and other items of interest to curious young minds.  Summer has lots going on for young readers who visit the Kenilworth Public Library between June 25 and Aug. 3.

In addition to being able to earn free paperback books based on the amount of time spent reading, children who are members of the various reading clubs may participate in the following activities: Monday PJ Storytime (6:30-7 p.m.) for ages 3 and up, Tuesday Lap Sit (10:30-10:50 a.m.) for newborns through age 2; Wednesday Toddler Time (10:30-10:50 a.m.) for 2 year olds.

Visit the library beginning on June 11 to register for reading clubs and these weekly programs. Children must register for the summer reading club in person.

Children must be registered in the summer reading club in order to register for all summer reading club events. Registration is also required for the following weekly programs: Bingo For Young Children will be held on Thursdays, July 5 and August 2 (11:00 -11: 30 a.m.) for ages 3 & up.

Bingo for Children Who Can Read will be held on Thursday, July 19 (11:00 – 11: 30a.m).

Craft workshops will be held on Fridays (11 a.m. to noon) for ages 4 and up on June 29, July 6, 13, 20 & 27 and August 3.

Lego at The Library will be held on Thursdays June 28, July 12 and July 26 this summer at 11:00am-11:30am for children ages 4-12 years old. Children ages 4-9 years old must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. Each week children will have an opportunity to build their own creative project based on a weekly theme.  Registration is required. Kenilworth residents may begin to register one week prior to each session. Out of town residents may begin to register two days prior to each session, space permitting. Lego at the Library is made possible through a grant from the Walmart Local Giving program.

Special events: Kenilworth Public Library Rocks! Will be held on Monday, June 25th at 5:30 – 7:00pm. Join us at this open house event as we kick off the 2018 Summer Reading Club! The Kenilworth Public Library will be rockin’ with great DJs from AJ Studios. Enjoy great music throughout the building, dancing, games, activities, a photo booth and raffle prizes!

Children and teens ages 2 – 18 are welcome to sign up for the 2018 Summer Reading Club during this event.

Thursday night special events will be held each week at 7:00 – 7:45pm beginning on June 28th – August 2 for children ages 4 – 12 years old. Beginning on June 28th, Fantastic Forces, an interactive science based program will be presented by Lisa Lou. This program will be presented by a recycling Grant given to The Borough of Kenilworth. Build A Bear Teddy Bear Workshop will be held on Friday, June 29 at 11:00 – 12:00 noon for children ages 4 – 12 years old. During this workshop, children will have an opportunity to hand-stuff a cuddly teddy bear. Each child will name and dress their bear prior to taking him home. This workshop has been funded by The Friends of The Kenilworth Public Library. Registration is required. Kenilworth residents may begin to register one week prior to this event. Out of town residents may begin to register two days prior to this event.

FULL STEAM AHEAD 2018 MAKER ACADEMY lottery is open through Tuesday, June 12, 2018. The Kenilworth Public Library will host a summer-long odyssey into the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math culminating in a trip to The Winter Garden Theater located in New York City to view the Broadway play, School of Rock!. The Kenilworth Makers Academy, created through the generous support of the Ralph Errington Charitable Foundation, will run from June 27 to August 1 on Wednesday afternoons at 3:30 – 4:30pm, followed by a trip to view the Broadway play, School of Rock on Saturday, August 11. Children and teens ages 9 – 14 years old are welcome to apply for entry into the Academy.  Preference will be given to Kenilworth residents and students. Entrants chosen via lottery will be admitted to a series of exciting and educational classes hosted by Wondergy, Mad Science of Union and Hudson Counties, and professional musician Caryn Lin at the Kenilworth Public Library, located at 548 Boulevard. The library will give everyone the chance to celebrate their accomplishments during the Ninth Annual LibraryFest, an open house event scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 9, between the hours of 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Participants will thrill to the amazing interactive science experiments presented by Wondergy.

Children will also receive a special balloon sculpture made just for them by Mark Dolson; marvel at the sleight of hand of magician Francis Menotti, and receive a special gift from the library. Families attending LibraryFest should anticipate a forty-five minute time frame for participation in all of the evening’s events and all children in attendance must be accompanied by a parent or other responsible adult.

No registration will be required to attend LibraryFest. LibraryFest has been funded by The Friends Of The Kenilworth Public Library, and a Recycling Grant given to the Borough of Kenilworth.
