Position Available: Part-Time Library Assistant

Job Summary:  The Library Assistant is to help perform routine circulation functions, provide excellent customer service, provide technology instruction, conduct and assist with programs and other library activities.  Reports directly to the Library Director.


Job Hours:

Monday & Thursday      5pm to 8 pm

Saturday                       10 am to 2 pm (closed June-August)


Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent education required.


Required competencies:

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written) with staff and patrons.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationship with co-workers.

Ability to work with limited supervision.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Ability to pay attention to detail and organizational skills

Requires physical agility and strength to bend, reach, lift and carry (up to 50 lbs.), and push/pull loaded book carts when shelving.

Ability to withstand extensive standing while working.

Ability to work with children.

Knowledge of Windows environment, use of email and standard Office computer programs.


Essential Duties:

Provide reference and reader’s advisory services.

Assist patrons with use of library materials and equipment.

Conduct and assist with programs and special events.

Assist in maintenance of exhibits, posters and displays.

Assist in maintenance of Adult and Juvenile Book Collection.

Cover other areas of library when needed, including weekend rotation and evening coverage when needed.

Handle all aspects of circulation, including check-out, check-in, processing of fines, new library card registration and renewal and requests for materials.

Shelve materials and read shelves.

Handle telephone calls and route messages.

Share responsibility for building supervision, opening and closing procedures.

Attend professional development workshops as recommended.

Provide technology instruction/education for library patrons.

Other tasks as assigned by the Library Director.



Exceptional customer service and technology skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online search tools

Public library experience preferred
